Google is Banning all Crypto Mining Extensions from Chrome

After the announcement made by Google early this year, regarding the prohibition of Cryptocurrency Advertisement on their network (including Youtube), they announced they are also banning Crytpocurrency Mining Extensions from Chrome Extension Store

Google Bans all Cryptocurrency Mining Extensions

Google posted about this today on its Chromium blog, the official blog for discussions about their browsers. They said they will not allow new extensions for Chrome / Chromium which allow users to mine cryptocurrency directly from the browser window. They also said that they will begin to remove existing extensions that can do that.

But this is probably due to the fact that many malicious extensions would mine Cryptocurrency without letting the users know, so this was the only way for Google to end this.

The blog announcement also stated that from April 2nd, Google team will not accept any extensions related to cryptocurrency mining. And the existing ones are going to be removed from Google Chrome extension store until June.

But they are not banning all Cryptocurrency Extensions, crypto extensions will be allowed only if the extensions clearly state what they are supposed to do and, of course, do not mine cryptocurrency. So there will still be cryptocurrency extensions with functions like displaying crypto charts, price alerts, etc.

The extensions that mine cryptocurrency usually mines CPU coins, like Monero for example. Because even low-end computers are able to mine this kind of cryptocurrency.

Recently there was a case about an extension called SafeBrowse, that was supposed to protect the users from online threats. They had more than 140,000 users and it was discovered that they were secretly mining Monero all the time, and the users didn't even know about that.

Also, probably it's just a matter of time for them to ban Cryptocurrency Mining Apps also from Playstore (Android), since there are hundreds of applications (apks) that are able to mine cryptocurrency on their victim's devices. And many times these apps don't even inform the users that they can do that. Not to mention that this is even worse for phone users, because it usually heats a lot more than computers, which can cause many problems to the device.
